Micronesia :: Yap : Samakai Wall

This site is found on the eastern side of Yap, south of The Valley of the Rays. It is a vertical wall that drops to some 30m and as it has easy currents, it makes for a pleasant drift dive. Coral is abundant here - as it is pretty much all the way down the east coast. Star and table corals are particularly evident. The site supports a multitude of small reef fish as well as a good number of sharks, turtles, barracuda, lionfish, stonefish and moray eels.

Closeby and just to the north is Lighthouse Pass which used to provide access to a Japanese lighthouse during the war. Again, it is usually a gentle drift dive and coral is in good condition. The entrance to the pass normally attracts large pelagics including whitetip and grey reef sharks and eagle and manta rays.

Slightly to the south of Samakai Wall is Sakura Terrace. This gentle slope is especially good for night diving and as its name suggests, it is made up of terraces which have plenty of swim-throughs and crevices to explore. In the shallows you'll again see plenty of small reef fish, while the deeper areas reveal sharks, rays, monkfish and lobsters.
