Micronesia :: Palau : Amatsu Maru

This oil tanker was sunk just off Koror in Malakal Harbour. Her life was short, having come into service only 4 months before being sunk. At a length of 520 ft, this is the largest wreck around Palau and she lies upright in 40m of water.

The dive is excellent both for those who have the experience to penetrate the hull and for others who can marvel at the structure from the outside. The hull is covered in black coral trees, hence the site's nickname Black Coral Wreck. Despite Japanese salvaging after the war, the innards of the ship are remarkably intact. Entry can be gained through the roof of the bridge and the communication area, on the deck below the wheelhouse, is still in good condition with radio and electrical equipment clear to see. The stern was badly damaged by explosions, but the 4 blade propellor is still there and the remains of a circular gun platform are still visible.

To really appreciate this wreck, you'll probably need two dives. Although visibility is not so good within the harbour, wreck enthuiasts will not be disappointed with this site.
