Asia Dive News : NAUI sponsors marine education program in Asia
NAUI Pacific Rim recently hosted twenty-five lucky students at the Coral Redang Resort in Terengganu, Malaysia to participate and study about marine life as part of its Student Marine Education Program.
The program, which was held from August 19-21, is a school vacation program involving snorkeling and marine education for students ages 12-14. The Student Marine Education Program was designed as a way to instill in students the importance of marine life and its conservation. Students who participated in the program also studied the marine environment and were introduced to skin diving and entry-level scuba.
During the fun-filled weekend, students participated in marine environment associated quizzes and games, which allowed students the opportunity to express their new-found knowledge and understanding of the underwater world.
"These are the kind of programs that can make a real difference in young people's lives,” said Michael Tong, NAUI Pacific Rim President. “I am excited that NAUI Worldwide has directed another one of its many environmental programs to this region and that we have been able to deliver such a wonderful experience to school children.”
The 3 day 2 night program was organized and funded by the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI), and staffed by 15 members/instructors. The Director of Fisheries Department of Malaysia and the Director of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment both were present. The program is part of the continuing environmental public service projects that NAUI has initiated in recent years, which include relief efforts for members victimized by the 2004 Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and coastal clean-up last year in Phuket, Thailand.
NAUI Worldwide is the oldest, second-largest and most respected diver certifying organization in the world, whose members offer a full range of training programs from Skin Diver through Instructor Course Director, with dozens of specialty courses including Nitrox and Technical diving. Tens of thousands of NAUI member instructors, dive businesses, resorts, and service centers are located in countries throughout the world.
